Tax invoices and what must be on them
Updated 22 October 2026
Only businesses registered for VAT send tax invoices. The app checks each one before it goes, and asks you for anything missing at the top of the draft.
On every tax invoice
- The words “Tax Invoice”
- Your business name, address and VAT number
- The client’s name
- A number and the date
- Each item’s description, quantity, price and amount
- The subtotal, the VAT and the total
Over R5,000
A tax invoice for more than R5,000 also needs the client’s address, and their VAT number if they’re registered for VAT. The app asks once for each client whether they’re registered.
Within 21 days
A tax invoice must be issued within 21 days of finishing the job. When a quote has been accepted for 14 days without an invoice, Home reminds you.
Keep them for 5 years
SARS asks you to keep your records for 5 years. Your documents stay in the app while your account exists, and you can download them all at any time. See Export your data.
The app checks the fields SARS asks for, but it doesn’t give tax advice. If you’re unsure about your tax, ask your bookkeeper or SARS.
